Test of Charcoal Pillow

My Charcoal Pillow Test Results, Can I Recommend It?

I’ve spent last week testing a Charcoal Pillow and I found some benefits of it, as well as downsides.

What Are the Benefits of a Charcoal Pillow?

The benefits of a charcoal infused pillow are:

  • Not too cold or hot
  • Less odor
  • Absorbs moisture without retaining odor like other materials
  • Better sleep (due to less overheating or feeling too cold)
  • Memory foam provides good support for your head, neck, and shoulders
  • Memory foam allows for good air circulation
  • Resistant to allergens, mold, bacteria, and dust mites

I would say the main benefit of a charcoal memory foam pillow is that it regulates temperature and won’t let you overheat during sleep. I can recommend it for people who tend to sweat more or feel hot during the night.

Types of Charcoal Pillows

There are bamboo memory foam and charcoal-infused gel memory foam bed pillows.

The main difference is the type of materials they are made from. I tested the regular memory foam version. The gel memory foam pillow suits more for those looking for an extra soft feel. A downside is that it is less natural than the bamboo version.

Positive Sides of a Bamboo Charcoal Pillow

Bamboo Charcoal Pillow Main Benefits I found

Charcoal pillows are a type of memory foam, and what is special about this pillow is that it is made with activated charcoal. I spoke with the manufacturer of the pillow and they told me that high temperatures change the inside of the charcoal, making the holes smaller and increasing the surface area. So a charcoal pillow can soak up moisture, spread out heat, and get rid of smells. From the pillows I’ve personally tried, this charcoal pillow is so far the best at regulating temperature. I tested it on a hot summer night and wasn’t overheated. I also tested it again in winter and it performed well, making it an all-season recommendation.

Benefits of Charcoal Gel Pillows

Since I haven’t personally tested this type of pillow, I asked a consultant at the Portland pillow store “Dream Pillows” named Annie about them. She told me the following: The main differences of gel charcoal pillows are that they are lighter in weight, cheaper in price due to lower production costs (bamboo is more difficult to work with and costs more), and slightly softer than the bamboo pillows. That softness is the main reason we offer the gel pillow as a second option.

Pillowcase Charcoal Pillows Also Made Of Bamboo

I didn’t know this fact until I talked to a consultant after testing the bamboo version of the charcoal pillows. What I noticed is that the bamboo pillowcase actually feels very nice on the skin – I would put it at the same level as silk pillowcases. It has a very similar soft, smooth feel. I can tell it’s not cheap, but in my opinion it’s worth the money. This is just my own opinion and perception of the bamboo pillowcase though – you’ll have to make your own choice. An interesting fact is that the bamboo pillowcases are made with rayon, which is a mix of natural bamboo fibers and synthetic bamboo fiber.

Safety Of Charcoal Pillows

Activated charcoal is used medically to treat poisoning and overdoses. It’s also found in facial masks and other skincare products because it pulls out dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. Activated charcoal is even being added to teeth whitening products and air purifiers to absorb odors and pollutants.

With this powerful cleansing ability, it’s no wonder activated charcoal is making its way into pillows. The charcoal traps allergens, dust mites, and odors that would otherwise collect in the fabric over time. This helps provide a cleaner, healthier sleeping environment for those with allergies or skin sensitivities. The natural detoxifying properties of the charcoal also inhibit microbial growth, mold, and bacteria within the pillow. Unlike some synthetic pillow fillers, activated charcoal offers these benefits in an all-natural form that is non-toxic and hypoallergenic.

Overall, activated charcoal’s proven absorbent properties make it a safe choice for pillow filler in terms of volatile organic compound (VOC) safety. This allows you to reap the benefits of its natural detoxifying abilities while you sleep.

Downsides of Charcoal Pillows

I did not find any specific downsides during my test, but I can see how it might not be the best choice for stomach sleepers, due to the shape of the pillow. Also, for those who prefer a firmer pillow, it may not be ideal. Despite the bamboo version being a vegan option, the gel memory foam version is not vegan.
